Press Release: Japan hands over 7 “Dr. Car” to Sudan

On 11th August, H.E. Mr. Ryoichi Horie, Ambassador of Japan to Sudanand Mr. Seiichi Koike, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sudan Officeattended the handover ceremony of 7 “Dr. Cars” (mobile clinic)fromJICA to Sudan with H.E. Prof. Mamoun Homeida, Minister of Health in Khartoum State, and H.E. Dr. El-Fatih Mohamed Malik, Minister of Health in Gezira Statetogether with the guests from the UN and international organizations at the Japan house of International Park in Khartoum State.
 
“Dr. Car” is a medical vehicledispatched with a doctor on board to rural and remote areas with limited access to health services and resident physicians. “Dr. Car” can also function as an ambulance in case of emergency. Axiohelix, aJapanese companydeveloping and supplying Dr. Car,has recently opened an office in Sudan. It is highly expected that this project will strengthen and extend the business relationship between Sudan and Japan.
 
At the ceremony, Ambassador Horiesaid as a friend and an equal partnerof Sudan, Japan has committed itself to helptacklingvarious challengesinhealth sectorhand in hand with the people of Sudan. He praisedthe tireless effortsmade byall the stakeholders in conducting the Dr. Car project, which will mark a step forward in solving the health problems in Sudan.He also stressed that the peace, stability, and development in Sudan will contribute to the achievement of peace and stability in Africa and the world, and Japan will exert its utmost efforts to establish stronger partnership with Sudanese counterparts through implementing various joint projects.
 
Minister of Health in Khartoum State, H.E. Prof. Mamoun Homeida, expressed his sincere gratitude to the generous support from the Government and the people of Japan to the various development and humanitarian projects in Sudan. He remarked “As Sudan has a substantial need for assistance especially in medical and health sectors, I am sure that Dr. Car will contribute in improving Primary Health Care (PHC) and will provide the necessary medical services in the remote areas in an efficient manner.”
 
During the ceremony, the participants witnessed the demonstration of “Telemedicine”, namely, remote communication technology equipped with Dr. Car and its smooth communication between the doctor on board and central operation base which will be most probably in the capitals of the states such as in Khartoum and Wad Medani. It is important to highlight that 3 Dr. Car wouldbe provided toKhartoum State and 5 cars to Gezira State includingonealready grantedto Gezira State in2013.
 
In addition, Dr. Car has its own unique history in Japan especially duringthe massive earthquakethat hit the Tohoku region of Japan in March 2011, claiminglives of more than 15,000 peopleand causing massive numbers of missing. The devastating natural disaster brought numerous difficulties and challenges for thevictimsin the region, such ascut of transportation network, absence of electricity and limited access to health services, the issue that made many people in the region suffer from serious infectious diseases. In order to respond to the urgent needs of the suffering people, Dr. Car has played an extremely important role in providingprompt medical check-up service and in preventing the spread of infectious diseases in the disaster affected areas
