Press Release: Five Sudanese Nuba Wrestlers Visit Japan For Olympic Wrestling Training

On 25th June, 2015, H.E. Mr. Hideki Ito, Ambassador of Japan to Sudan hosted a dinner at his residence in honor ofFive Sudanese wrestlers who will depart soon to Japan to have an intensive Olympic wrestling training at Nippon Science Sport University in Yokohama starting from 29th June till 31st July, 2015. The dinner was attended by Mr.Abdelrahman Elsallawi, Vice President of Sudan Olympic Committee, Engineer Ahmed Abu Elgasim Hashim, Secretary General of the Sudan Olympic Committee, Mr. Alnugumi Jaras, Chairman of Khartoum State Wrestling Union in addition to the Five wrestlers departing to Japan.
The dispatch of the Five wrestlers to Japan was decided within the context of the joint cooperation between Japan and Sudan in the field of sport, in particular wrestling. This joint cooperation which is known as, “The Wrestling Diplomacy Project”started in August, 2014 with the agreement among the Embassy of Japan in Sudan, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and Sudan Olympic Committee aiming to further promote Japan-Sudan sport exchanges.Upon the initiative, Mr. Kosuke Sunagawa, a Japanese wrestler called “SUNA” was dispatched by the Government of Japan to Sudan on November, 2014 and February, 2015 respectivelyin order to train a number of prominent Sudanese Nuba wrestlers in the Olympic wrestlingmanner. As Japan will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020, the Government of Japan with the help of the Sudanese counterparts is committed to help realizing the dream of Sudan’s participation in the “Tokyo 2020”.
Mr. Alnugumi Jaras, Chairman of Khartoum State Wrestling Union said that Olympic wrestlinghas started to gain more attention recently in Sudanthanks to the Japanese cooperation. He stressed that the training session in Japan would become a true opportunity for the Sudanese wrestlers toget accustomed to the Olympic wrestling rule, which is different from Sudanese Nuba wrestling. On the other hand, Eng. Ahmed Abu Elgasim Hashim, Secretary General of Sudan Olympic Committee affirmed thatthe trainingin Japan is even considered as an important preparation for “Rio de Janeiro 2016”. It isworth mentioning that this training is sponsored by the Government of Japan, Japan Wrestling Federation, Sudan Olympic Committee, and DAL Group.
