Press Release: Japanese Embassy Celebrates the 82nd Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan Akihito

H.E. Mr. Hideki Ito, the Ambassador of Japan to Sudan, hosted a reception on the 9th of December at his residence on the occasion of the Japanese National Day, which marks the 82nd birthday of His Majesty the Emperor Akihito. The reception was attended by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Yousif Ali Yousif, Minister of Industry, as the representative of the Government of Sudan, as well as a large number of distinguished guests.
 
In the beginning of his speech, Ambassador Ito said that the relations between Japan and Sudan are witnessing steady development. He stressed that Japan, hand in hand with Sudan, has implemented many economic cooperation projects that focus on three pillars namely, 1) agricultural development, 2) providing basic human needs and 3) consolidation of peace and he explained Japan’s assistance philosophy, which is “Not to give a fish, but transfer the skill of how to fish”. He said that he is trying to visit as many Japanese projects as possible all over Sudan to see their activities by himself, noting that he visited 13 states since his arrival in Sudan.
 
Furthermore, Ambassador Ito touched upon the importance of expanding the cooperation between Japan and Sudan into other areas such as culture and sports. In the sports sector, he stated that Japan received five Sudanese wrestlers in order to have training on Olympic wrestling and invited the chairman of the Olympic Committee in Sudan to Japan to discuss future cooperation in this field. He explained that as the result of this visit, Japan is now considering the possibility of receiving some Sudanese wrestlers next year again.
 
Ambassador Ito concluded his remarks by welcoming the initiative of the national dialogue that was launched by the Government of the Sudan as well as the government’s continued efforts to encourage the oppositions and the armed groups to participate in it. He hoped that both sides will show further flexibility to realize a Sudanese national consensus, which will bring about a peaceful and stable Sudan and will improve Sudan’s image before the international community.
 
As the representative of the Government of Sudan, H.E Dr. Mohammed Yousif Ali Yousif conveyed the congratulations of H.E. President Albashir to His Majesty Emperor Akihito and the Government and people of Japan. He emphasized that the bilateral relations between Sudan and Japan have been expanding dramatically in recent years. He highly praised Japan’s efforts for supporting Sudan in many fields especially in the development sector and expressed his appreciation for its continuous assistance that aims at realizing peace, stability and development in Sudan.
 
After the speeches by Ambassador Ito and H.E Dr. Yousif, there was a demonstration from performers of Taiko, traditional Japanese drums, who came especially to reflect a part of Japan’s culture. The demonstration was welcomed by the attendees with big applause and huge excitement.
