KHARTOUM, 6 April 2017 - The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomed today a contribution of over US$ 2.5 million from the people and Government of Japan to support the agency’s work in Sudan.
Japan’s contribution will help UNHCR to support the Government of Sudan in its response to a growing number of South Sudanese refugees seeking safety in Sudan. The contribution will help ensure basic services for refugees as well as host communities in White Nile State, and East and South Darfur states, including water and sanitation facilities, shelter and child protection.
Japan is also supporting UNHCR’s efforts within the inter-agency response for IDPs to provide shelter and non-food items, including for returnees, within Darfur.
H.E. Mr. Hideki Ito, Ambassador of Japan to Sudan, said: “The Sudanese do not only support their fellow IDPs but also refugees from neighboring countries. This proves how generous Sudanese people are. I highly appreciate the generosity of Sudan’s people. Sudan deserves international support in this endeavour. We are proud to be part of that endeavour in partnership with UNHCR.”
UNHCR Representative, Ms. Noriko Yoshida, welcomed Japan’s funding, saying: “We are very grateful to Japan for its continued strong support to UNHCR’s activities in Sudan. Its unwavering efforts to improve the well-being of refugees, IDPs and other persons of concern is commendable. UNHCR is committed to working together with Japan to ensure assistance reaches vulnerable refugees and other persons of concern, but also, importantly, to find solutions for their situation.”
Sudan generously hosts over 480,000 refugees within its territory, from Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
Notes
UNHCR in Sudan works with the Commission for Refugees (COR), the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), and other national and international partners to assist refugees, asylum-seekers, and internally displaced people.
