Japan’s project aims at enhancing efficiency of the collection means by fixing the time and point to collect wastes and raising public awareness on the issue of waste management. The provision of equipment is combined with a technical assistance by Japanese experts who have been working with their Sudanese counterparts for more than five years.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Mr. Ito emphasized that “not only cooperating on an official level, however, we think each of you, Sudanese people also need to change their life style partly and to care about waste management to address the issue.” Then he revealed something special about the new vehicles. It is a legendary football hero of a famous Japanese cartoon, Captain Majed. His pictures are posted on all vehicles.
Ambassador Ito explained “I hope the picture of Captain Majed will attract attention of people, both adults and children, and make them talk about Captain Majed and the issue of wastes at home. Also I hope that the stronger attention of people will give stronger motivation to garbage collecting workers to work harder. Captain Majed is shooting the ball to the goal. Let us throw away garbage to our goals, fixed places. I would be so pleased if our projects of waste management could help you redeem your ‘beautiful Khartoum’ in the near future together with Captain Majed”.
