Press Release: Japan Contributes USD750,000 to the Strengthening of Rule of Law in Sudan

The Government of Japan has made a generous contribution of USD 750,000 to UNDP’s Strengthening the Capacity of the Sudan National Human Rights Commission (SNHRC) project which will be implemented from 2015 to 2018 with the main objective of supporting the SNHRC in the development of its operational, technical and legal capacities to become a cornerstone within Sudan’s national human rights protection system, in line with the Paris Principles.
“The National Interim Constitution stipulates the establishment of a National Human Rights Commission for promoting human rights. I am pleased to announce the support of the Government of Japan towards the UNDP project providing technical and capacity building support to this Commission. I hope that this project, through enhancing the capacity of the Sudan National Human rights Commission, will contribute to improving human rights conditions in Sudan.”, comments H.E. Hideki Ito, Ambassador of Japan in Sudan.
The Sudan National Human Rights Commission (SNHRC) was formally established by a presidential decree in January 2012, which was welcomed by the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council 15 October, 2012. Based on an initial capacity assessment and UNDP’s experience in supporting national human rights institutions worldwide, UNDP Sudan’s support will address the needs and capacity gaps in order to strengthen the governance, functioning and effectiveness of the commission and support its development as an independent national human rights institution in compliance with the Paris Principles.
“We are extremely grateful to the Government and the people of Japan for their precious support to this important capacity development initiative, which complements Japan’s support to Community Stabilization”, said Abdel-Rahman Ghandour, acting Resident Representative of UNDP in Sudan. “Japan is a trusted and strategic partner of UNDP, and its efforts towards development in Sudan must be commended.”
Joseph Khalil Soliman, Acting Chairperson of Sudan Human Rights Commission, also expresses his appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for the invaluable support to this important institution.
This contribution from the Government of Japan covers half of the total budget of USD 1.5 million for the Strengthening the Capacity of the Sudan National Human Rights Commission project, 2015 – 2018, and enables immediate implementation of key activities.
