Press Release: Japanese Ambassador Hosts Ramadan Iftar

On July 16, 2014, H.E. Mr. Ryoichi Horie, the Ambassador of Japan to Sudan,hosted Ramadan Iftar at his residenceto acknowledge and celebrate the strong bonds of friendship between the people of Japan and Sudan.The Iftar was attended by Mr. Hashim Haroon, President of Sudan Olympic Committee; Mr. Awad Mustafa, President of Sudan Paralympic Committee; Eng. Khalid Fadl Elsied Abdallah, President of the Sudan-Japan Friendship Association; Dr. Nasr Al-Dien Shulgami, President of the Sudanese Horticultural Society, as well as a number of distinguished guestsmainly in the field of culture, education and sports.
 
During the Iftar, Ambassador Horie made a speech in which he welcomed all the guests and congratulated them on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan. He hoped that Ramadan will bring peace, justice and equality for Sudan and the whole world. He said “the Holy month of Ramadan demonstrates the true spirit of Islam. Muslims around the world will spend the month in prayer and reflection, fasting each day and joining together in family and community each evening. We are excited that tonight we are able to share the sense of Ramadan with so many of our friends in Khartoum, and wish that tonight’s Iftar will serve as a good opportunity to further developthe friendly and cooperative tiesbetween Japan and Sudan”. He underlined that Japan and Sudan have common culture which attaches importance to living together with others in a spirit of tolerance.
 
Ambassador Horie said that he has visited 13 states since arriving in Sudan in May 2012 to follow up the projects funded by the Government of Japan and to hold dialogues with the state governors and local residents on how to strengthen Japan-Sudan relationship. He said that Sudan fascinated him with its great expanses of land, profoundly diverse people, cultures, and nature. He pointed that Sudan has shown him so many different faces of its diverse culture wherever he visited and that heenjoyed listening to lively music, dancing with local people and eating the local Sudanese food as Fasikh, Ashida, Muluha, Gorassa and Kawal.
 
As a representative of the guests, the President of Sudan National Olympic Committee, Mr. Hashim Haroon, has expressed his deepest appreciation and gratitude for the Japanese Ambassador for the Iftar invitation. He said that bilateral relations between Sudan and Japan are deeply rooted and have been dramatically multilayered recently,and the Sudan National Olympic Committee is willing to promote its relations with Japan through various sports activities including wrestling exchange to win a medal in Tokyo 2020 Olympic.
 
Japan and Sudan have been enjoying friendly and cooperative relations since the establishment of the diplomatic relations in 1956and the Embassy of Japan has organized a number of cultural events such as “Japan Day” at the Khartoum University, movie screenings and annual Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement) competition in Sudan. At the same time, one of the Japanese diplomats known as “MURO” has challenged six times against Sudanese Nuba Wrestlers at the Haj Youssef Wrestling Stadium in Khartoum. Furthermore, Tokyo is going to host the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. We wish to celebrate this great sport event with the people of Sudan and its best athletes representing the country in “Tokyo 2020”.
