The chargé d'affaires Mizuuchi accompanied by representatives of the Embassy staff and JICA visits Port Sudan to inspect the delivery of humanitarian aid provided by the Japanese government through UN agencies to the Sudanese people

During his two visits to Port Sudan, Mr. Mizuuchi Kentaro, the Chargé d'affaires of Japan to Sudan and the accompanying delegation were updated by WFP and other major UN agencies on the international efforts to relief the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
Mr. Mizuuchi, accompanied by representatives of the Embassy staff and JICA in Sudan, held two visits to Port Sudan in March and January 2024.
The Japanese delegation, lead by Mr. Mizuuchi, had a wide range of activities during the two missions, such as visiting the IDP gathering points and food factories to inspect the delivery of the humanitarian aid provided by the Japanese government to the Sudanese people through UN agencies. As part of this activity, the delegation met and spoke with Sudanese nationals including children and women to learn about their situation and needs.
 
   

On the sidelines of the visits, the Japanese delegation also met with the heads and the representatives of international agencies working to provide relief and humanitarian assistance; the World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Food and Agricultural organization for the United Nations (FAO), and United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan, to which Japan provides funding to meet the basic needs of Sudanese people affected by the conflict in Sudan.
Another significant meeting was also held between the Japanese delegation and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ms. Clementine Nkweta-Salam, the two parties had positive and vital discussions regarding dealing with the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
The total amount provided by Japan, through several international humanitarian organizations, to support IDPs, refugees and returnees in Sudan during 2023, amounted to about $92 million.
Mr. Mizuuchi expressed his appreciation to the efforts made by many of these agencies and their workers, in cooperation with their local and international counterparts, to optimize the use of the contributions made by Japan to the Sudanese people.
Speaking about Japan-Sudan relations, Mr. Mizuuchi referred to the historical relations between Japan and Sudan since the latter's independence, and expressed his pleasure that these relations continue through the humanitarian assistance provided by the Japanese people to the Sudanese in these difficult times.
